For today’s Small Business Spotlight, we spoke to David and Anel of The Rusty Nail, a whimsical custom furniture store in Cape Town, South Africa.
Tell us a little about the Rusty Nail? What inspired you to get started?
The Rusty Nail was inspired by my wife and I in an effort to find a creative outlet for ourselves and to provide clients with affordable, unique furniture pieces that you would not usually find in mainstream outlets. The name was a spontaneous suggestion and it stuck form the start!
What is one very important lesson you’ve learnt from starting your own business?
Most important lesson—Don’t try to move too quickly, take your time. Learn. Listen. Watch and grow from your errors…
What’s your favorite part about your work?
My favorite part of my work is seeing the delight on peoples faces/receiving feedback once they have their new pieces delivered…
What was the most exciting experience you’ve had at work?
There has not been one most exciting event but rather a gradual realization that what we do has grown, is viable as a business and that we can create work we love for others in our own time! It is hard work but extremely rewarding…
What do you like to do in your spare time?
What we like to do in our spare time – I am very fortunate that my “work” is my passion and I am truly obsessed with designing and making furniture so most of my spare time is spent on research. We also love being outside, gardening and touring our beautiful country (see selfie picture of us in The Drakensberg—a mountain range far North of Cape Town, taken out of the sunroof!). We are also both very fond of cooking/baking and spend most evenings/weekends trying out new ideas…
What are your 5 favorite foods?
Good spicy Indian curry, slow roast lamb, tacos with all the trimmings, steak and chips, good quality home made burgers.
