Today’s Small Business Spotlight features The Academy Music Centre, a music education facility and instrument shop in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. We asked Sean, the founder of The Academy Music Centre, about himself and his business.
Tell us a little about your business. What makes it unique?
Aiming to be the leading one-stop music centre, The Academy Music Centre not only offers contemporary music education, we also sell a wide range of musical instruments ranging from basic to premium quality.
We also help run various musical plays, peripatetic teacher’s programs, and IGCSE music programs for various high profiled International schools. All our educators are highly qualified teachers that have experiences teaching people of various situations, ethnicity and ages.
What inspired you to start (or work in) this type of business?
I studied music after high school and originally I wanted to be a music producer. In time, I landed my first part-time teaching job while I was still studying in college. I realized that I have a passion for teaching and eventually one thing lead to another I decided to start my own school. I realized that there aren’t many contemporary music schools and quality of teaching is not up to par. I decided to change that.
What was the most exciting experience you’ve had at work?
Wow, it’s been a crazy roller coaster. I’ve had my ups and downs. The most exciting experience was when I land my first big client! I was to run an entire music program for a year. That was big and exciting! Now, I’m busy producing a musical play for a school and I predict that that’s gonna be my next most exciting experience.
Do you have any advice for people interested in going into this type of work?
I’m a firm believer in doing what you love. People will come and tell you that you’re not good enough or whatever you’re doing is not gonna be enough to put food on the table. Stay true to your heart, work smart, work hard and follow your heart. Even if you fail, at least you know you tried and live with no regrets!
What is your favorite part of your job?
Inspiring, mentoring and teaching my staffs. Watching them grow to being leaders in their own right. In my opinion, that’s one of the best gift you can ever get.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
If I DO have spare time, I like to stay at home and watch TV Series or play video games. I’m a gamer geek and I’m also an introvert who enjoys my “me” time.
What is your favorite book (or movie)?
I read a lot of self help books and business articles. My favorite book would be “Tuesdays with Morrie.” That book is just amazing, it constantly reminds you that if you’re ever down or sad because of circumstances, you know that somewhere out there, someone like Morrie, would’ve gone through way worse and he always chose to look at things at a positive perspective.
What is your favorite inspirational quote?
I have 2.
“The biggest risk is by not taking any risk. In a world that changes really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is by not taking any risks.”
“First they think you’re crazy, then they fight you, then you change the world.”
Those 2 quotes spoke to me. Because that is so true for every entrepreneur. Many people fail because there are not willing to take risks. Also when you first start something, people will always disagree with you, but in the end you make a difference and perhaps change the world.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would really really like to go to Japan and the United States. Japan, because of the culture and the States because…it’s where all my favorite music stars and actors come from haha!
What is your idea of a perfect day?
Stay at home, watch TV series, play video games and spending time with loved ones. Oh and no phone calls from work!
How has Pagevamp helped your organization?
Being a person who majors in music, I lack knowledge in anything related to a website. I don’t know how to design a website, I know nothing about web domains, and worse of all, I don’t even know who to call for help.
Pagevamp was like God send! It was the perfect solution for people like me. It made designing websites an ease and the the support crew are just awesome! They are always available to assist at anytime.
I was using a Facebook page as my website for 2 years. After I finally had my own domain and Pagevamp site from visitors, clienteles and prospects has increased tremendously!
