Today’s Small Business Spotlight features Andrew Pearle, a USA-based photographer, pastor, and all-around family man. We asked Andrew a bit about himself and his journey with photography.
Tell us a little about yourself and your photography.
At, 34, I love photography, but I’m a full time pastor. I began shooting because we had a baby girl six years ago. My brother in law had a Canon Rebel XS so I bought one. He taught me some basics and then I began just shooting and having fun. It was nothing serious. We then moved and I became a student pastor in East Texas where I took my camera to youth camp and mission trips where I would capture the moments and fun times during the trip.
One of my students asked me to shoot some senior pictures for him. So I agreed to do it for free. One thing led to another, and I started shooting for various people. I began upgrading my camera gear to what I have now.
I do my absolute best to capture people in their most enjoyable, fun, and vulnerable moments. I have started using film based presets for my images and love it! I’ll use natural light most of the time, but I’ll use off camera flash if I need to.
What inspired you to become a photographer?
My brother in law really pushed me to get into it. I began following Jeremy Cowart, Scott Kelby, and a few others for inspiration.
What do you like most about your job?
I love getting to know new people. Learning their likes and dislikes, and capturing those moments for them.
What was the most exciting experience you’ve had at work?
Having the clients look at the final images and seeing the smiles on their faces. I have had a couple cry, and that made my day.
Do you have any advice for young people who are interested in going to this field?
Learn the basics of your camera. Don’t start in the ‘preset modes’ on your camera. If you’re shooting portraits, read and learn the basic settings, and shoot manually from the start. Challenge yourself and never settle for where you are.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I study and read a lot because I’m a pastor. However, I love spending time with my kids and my bride. I married my dream girl 8 years ago and we have 3 girls. I have learned that God only gives girls to the real mean. I’m learning how to do hair for the girls, and I fail miserably, haha.
If you could bring 3 things with you to a deserted island, what would they be?
My Bible, my family, and my camera bag
What is your favorite book (or movie)?
Favorite book other than the Bible (not just a cheesy answer it really is) but I love any military non fiction book. Currently I am reading ‘Worth Dying For’ by Rorke Denver, for Navy SEAL. I have read ‘Lone Survivor’ and ‘Service’ by Marcus Luttrell and those are amazing too.
Favorite movie of all time would have to be ‘Tombstone’!!! Greatest one liners of all time! ‘I’m your huckleberry!’ Love Doc Holiday!
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Every Disney resort because my family loves all things Disney. If not there I’d love to go back to Normandy, France.
What is your idea of a perfect day?
Spend time with my family. Can’t get much better than that.
